University Photography Fast and Furious – Part 4

Outdoors Having fun at Texas Woman's University Denton Campus

Being a university life photographer leads to different situations with every shoot booked. It can be indoors and freezing cold, and outdoors in the blazing sun. Regardless of the weather, I have to be there with the right equipment for every situation. This was shot just before the annual golf car parade began.

University Photography Working Fast and Furious – Part 1

TWU dance class caught in action outdoors at Texas Woman's University Denton Texas

As you can see from my already existing work on shannondrawe.com, there’s a lot of work demanded and delivered to Texas Woman’s University. The university photography thing comes as second nature to me having worked as “The University Photographer” for the University of North Texas right before graduating from there, and both schools have called on me over the years. UNT is chock full of photography staff now, so there is no reason for them to call (that’s were all the big buck tuition goes these days – faculty and staff expenses), but TWU has been steady for something like seventeen years.

Anyway, this is the first of at least twenty photo posts showing the photography work that has been going on with TWU in the past few weeks.

Maya Angelou at TWU

Maya Angelou speaks at Texas Womans University
Some people just give you goose bumps. When Maya Angelou took the time to ask my first and last name, phonetically sounding out the last, that was one of those times. Words. Words … names … have meaning

Summer Draws to an End in North Texas

Summer 2011 will go down in history as, at minimum, the second hottest summer in recorded history. As Yogi Berra said, “It aint’ over ’till it’s over,” and the fat lady hasn’t died of heatstroke just yet.
There are signs though. The students of UNT and TWU are back in Denton, Texas, driving the wrong way down the streets, and generally getting to know the quirky little big town of Denton. It’ll take some getting used to – for them. Us, we’re already used to it; we pull our seat belts a little snugger, and run about ten-miles-per-hour slower to lessen the impacts. It’s all good though. As one long gone wise old man once said, “Denton wouldn’t have made a town except for those universities!” Well, it may not have made a town, if you consider a transient population of 48-thousand students significant. I do.

So it’s back to work for TWU, and back to work for the business community of Denton – those with the wisdom to know the difference between a professional and not. It’s a hard place, but this is where we live, and survive.

Look for some fresh work to be coming down the way here in the next few weeks, and perhaps some new clients as well.

University Photography for TWU – Done a Bit Differently

Sometimes you have to just say, what the heck, and see what a little image manipulation does for the product. I am still looking for the cutting edge for TWU, but this kind of image processing is fairly easy, and does generate more of a theme to their campaigns.

TWU Fall Campaign Underway

School may be out, but we’re just getting started at Texas Woman’s University here in Denton, Texas. We have a few more shoots on the calendar already, and if we can get the weather to cooperate (it seems we are having a late spring around here), then there will be several new images to add to my “Higher Education” portfolio.

TWU on the way to the NCAA Basketball Tournament

TWU had a first ever sendoff for their women’s basketball team yesterday. They’re headed to March Madness, in Talequah, Oklahoma, so it may not get that mad. It was their first time, but probably not their last.

Fall Is In The Air

Summers in North Texas can cook the heck out of just about anything. Around here we enjoy our summers but they always end right on time. The first signs are signs of new lives at TWU and UNT campuses, cars going down one-way streets the wrong way, bright shiny faces at all the dive bars … the usual signs. And work picks up in anticipation of new needs for promotional and publicity photography.

I was counting the other day, and I think we are in the neighborhood of thirteen years association with Texas Woman’s University, at both the Dallas and Denton locations. It has been a wonderful association with a creative final product. It does make me wonder where other universities in the area get their day-to-day photography. Specifically, Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University in Dallas and Fort Worth respectively, don’t show many signs of freelance photography. I guess it is an institutional norm. UNT, at about 45-thousand students, is a behemoth of a conglomerate where budgets can be big and small, and ruled by different department’s criteria. It’s a great place to work when those stars align.

I occasionally wonder where some of the students at these universities look for professional connections. It used to be I had a revolving door of paid interns, but even though the local professors know the phone number, I guess reality isn’t on the curriculum anymore. If a student really wants to learn – FAST – have a go at www.livephotolessons.com. I realize I created a concept well ahead of its time, but I always have to plug it to see if anyone has caught up yet!

Coming in September – just booked another photo shoot including sitting Texas Governor Rick Perry in Denton, Texas. That should be a blast. The fall also means campaigns go into full swing, and I get the feeling there is going to be a pretty good turnout on the National level this time around.

TWU Keeping Busy

Texas Woman’s University, here in Denton, Texas, is once again working to update their photography, and the challenges this time of year are unique to this part of the US. WEATHER is a constant factor as temperature and humidity combine daily to take “feels like” temperatures into the lower 100′s.

University Photography – Client TWU

Texas Woman’s University is back in the swing while the summer months make for easier access to locations and models for shoots. This was for their promotional materials and in what will soon be the old Fitness & Recreation location for TWU. The new building is well underway.
