Hiring a Professional Photographer

At first glance, it has never been so easy to hire a pro photographer – especially in a small city like Denton, Texas.

The truth is there really aren’t that many professional photographers still standing – in Denton, Dallas or the DFW Metroplex. There ARE a lot of people with digital cameras who call themselves professional photographers, but what really is the definition of a “professional photographer” today.

A professional photographer has a few things that separate them from those who call themselves professional photographers. Originally, a professional photographer had at least one of the following assets that qualified them for the profession:

  • An Education
  • Experience
  • Talent
  • Skills

Now? All that is required is a camera, and … well, not much else. If that is satisfactory for you, you should stop reading now.

So how do YOU KNOW who it is you are looking at hiring to represent your brand, your company, your startup, your small business, your dream or vision?

  • LOOK – at a photographer’s work, the work you find here
  • READ – who is the person behind the camera?
  • TALK – talk to the photographer! Speak about your needs, and listen for the┬áresponses that come with experience.

Promotional photography TWU Denton Texas

Outdoor student study image on the campus of TWU
The weather happened to cooperate on this image, as bright sun would have been impossibly contrasty, hard to balance, and blown the highlights. Angle, position and location of this image are what makes it work for me, and TWU.

Soon enough, the young strong eyed hard bodied troops will age gracefully, and be part of their own band of brothers, with stories to tell and left untold.

Veteran’s Day in Denton Texas

A tough image to make with the flags constantly blowing, but I just admire their dedication, and the diversity of people serving our country in the twenty-first century. Plenty of young people could learn something about leadership from these folks – and they will some day.

It’s only a matter of time before these become the early images of congressmen, senators, presidents and corporate executives. And when I say, “matter of time,” I mean a short time. Obviously universities like Texas Woman’s University, and the University of North Texas recognize that their best and brightest come from these ranks, and are actively pursuing veterans for their student body.

Summer Draws to an End in North Texas

On 30, Aug 2011 | No Comments | In higher education | By Shannon

Summer Denton 2011 will go down in history as, at minimum, the second hottest summer in recorded history.

As Yogi Berra said, “It aint’ over ’till it’s over,” and the fat lady hasn’t died of heatstroke just yet.
There are signs though. The students of UNT and TWU are back in Denton, Texas, driving the wrong way down the streets, and generally getting to know the quirky little big town of Denton. It’ll take some getting used to – for them. Us, we’re already used to it; we pull our seat belts a little snugger, and run about ten-miles-per-hour slower to lessen the impacts. It’s all good though. As one long gone wise old man once said, “Denton wouldn’t have made a town except for those universities!” Well, it may not have made a town, if you consider a transient population of 48-thousand students significant. I do.

So it’s back to work for TWU, and back to work for the business community of Denton – those with the wisdom to know the difference between a professional and not. It’s a hard place, but this is where we live, and survive.

Look for some fresh work to be coming down the way here in the next few weeks, and perhaps some new clients as well.
