Shannon Drawe ~ Shannon Drawe Photography
With the exception of working about two years in Southern California, I have been in North Texas since 1980, and working as a professional photographer since 1987. In that time my work as changed almost as much as the technology used to create it. From the days of printing wet negatives on deadline, in a cramped newspaper closet darkroom, to the present day with multiple video monitors, computer towers and hard drives spinning all around what friends call “Command and Control Central.” I am pretty far removed from the closet darkroom days, as they have been replaced by art directors, designers and corporate boardrooms. It was a smooth transition as I always had an interest in multiple photographic genres, and have thrived while others fell away – because of my conscious decision to be more of a “generalist” than “specialist.”
From time to time I have to get back out and push my creative envelope, and that’s where personal projects like the North Texas State Fair and rodeo come in. If I find a spare moment to slip away from the office while the Fair is going on, I can get back to the grit, dirt and dust of photojournalism … and season it with a bit of an artistic approach. It’s all much more imaginable in these days of instantly being able to see if the attempt at something unusual is succeeding.
Times have changed, and the technology has changed, but the skills required are still the same.
